Upper Mystic River

Considering that I went out from 2:30 - 6:30PM on the hottest day of the year, I have to say today was a success.

Started off the day fishing the south end of Lower Mystic Lake, working my way down to the High Street bridge tossing a 4" Senko and fishing it slow, but nothing was happening.

So I tried something different. I Texas-rigged a Zoom Magnum Trick Worm with a 1/8 ounce bullet weight and started tossing it out into the hydrilla near the middle of the river. Let it drop in the holes and along the edges, and when all was said and done I had three small Largemouth to show for it. Two are pictured below, the last I didn't manage to get a shot of, but it was no more than 8 inches long. For good measure I've also tossed in a shot of a small Sally I caught on Sunday morning at the bridge.

  • It would be nice to find a map of Lower Mystic, primarily to get a sense as to whether there are some points and drop-offs close to shallow areas I can wade out to.

Gonna head out on Thursday for a few more hours, so we'll see what happens.

  • I live practically across the street from here (check out my trip "Our Summer Fishing", it covers from June until now), we were in the same spot here on Sunday and decent size Perch were all over. Picked up 4 of them here in about 30 minutes. Then another 1.5lb perch up by the damn, and saw some big karp up along the second cove on the east side of the lower lake.

Saturday we went from the harvard street bridge all the way down to the locks and back and didn't catch a thing.

Both days i had my fish finder out and saturday was hardly anything, sunday most fish were registereing in the 20-25 depth, the water is warm they must be hiding.

I too have been digging everywhere for a bathymetric Map of Mystic River and Lakes. There is one of the upper lake but thats it. Next stop is possible state marine or one of the local towns, but I never have the time during the day. Keep us posted if you find one though.

  • I do all of my fishing from shore and there are a fair number of spots to work from, some being reasonably tight. That being said, if you like pitching into cover you can easily reach some good beds of hydrilla and lilyp ads not far from shore.

  • are there a lot of shore spots here or do i need my canoe ?
i have been meaning to check it out.

  • You know, I was really surprised at how aggressive the fish were when I moved up to a larger bait and slightly faster presentation. Not the biggest fish, but the ones I caught (and a few I missed) nailed the crap out of it.

Fishing's been a bit slow on the Upper Mystic and at Lower Mystic Lake of late, with little to no current in the River and not much in the way of observable feeding in the Lake, but I've noticed a lot more panfish, baby bass, and perch in the shallows of late, much more so than at any other time, so hopefully that's a good sign of something.

I'd really love it if I could find a bathymetric (depth) map of Lower Mystic someplace to get a senseof where some points and drop-offs are, but there's nothing on Mass Wildlife.
